Abstract
In key documents self-determination has come to be defined as a legal right and a variable limiting the use of force and coercion. International surveys that reflect the opinion of users and patients towards the use of coercion have also gained significance. However, in national surveys and development work concerning people with intellectual disability there is scarce information about this topic. The National Institute on Intellectual Disability and Community (NAKU) is currently running three projects aimed at improving the knowledge base in the area. 1) A case study (ongoing) 2) A comparative study between NDCPD (Minote State University Center of Excellence) and NAKU (ongoing) 3) A joint application from The Faculty of Law of the University of Oslo, The Psychiatric Department for Intellectual Disabilities of Oslo University Hospital, The Programme of Social Education at Sør-Trøndelag University College and NAKU to the Norwegian Research Council. This project aims at applying a triangulation of quantitative and qualitative research methods. It also involves the establishment of a PhD position
