Abstract
Addiction has been defined as being a dysfunctional reward-seeking behaviour and a malfunction of the motivational system. Transtheoretical Model argues that behavior change involves a constellation of factors with motivation playing a central role. Recent research on motivation is rooted in the study of behavioral theories (i.e. learning theory, operant conditioning) emphasising the role of motives and incentives in behaviour change.
This study investigates the interplay between persons perceived negative and positive aspects of drug use, pathological symptoms and motivation to change among people with drug addiction problems. Pearson correlations and hierarchical multiple regression were used in order to identify the specific factors underpinning motivation to change. Our results could contribute in developing intervention programs aimed to increase motivation to change, an important factor in recovery from drug addiction.
